First Love

Remorse and regret were in his wide, child- like, brown eyes. A blood stained hunting hat hid most of his dark brown, almost black, hair. A round, yet sophisticated, face glared out the window at stormy night, slowly engulfing everything. His chest was broad from football. His arms and legs all lean muscle. He thought he had a gut, probably from drinking, but really he didn’t. Sucking his stomach in, flexing his muscles in front of a mirror, trying to be the man she always wanted him to be. That is how he spent most of his days anymore. Trying to be the man she wanted him to be. She was different. Unique. Big rustic blue eyes and auburn hair captured everyone’s attention. That and her lack of height, but she makes it up with big personality. She tightly wrapped herself in a blanket on her bed, fear of the oncoming storm. Mountain dew and her favorite pocket knife stood solely on her nightstand. Her cell phone, gripped tightly in her hands, while her thumps rapidly pounded on the keys. She was telling him how to be a man. But did she really understand? They both couldn’t sleep.
They made a perfect couple. Or that’s what everyone thought. She would laugh when people would sing “Keri and Josh sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G”. Josh would just get mad but her smile always melted his heart. Keri was his world. Was. She destroyed it with two little words. Two little words that still buzz in his head like angry bees. It’s over. Keri on the other hand didn’t take it as hard. She just kept living her life like nothing happened at all. The storm grew louder and so did Josh’s pain. It started out as one beer and lead to seven. Seven crushed grey cans scattered his floor. Click. Click. Click. The oxeycotten hit against the orange pill bottle side. He kept playing with the bottle turning it over and over and over again. Those three little pills decided his fate. Death. He was waiting for the right moment to wash them down but he never did. He was drunk and passed out before he even had the chance.
Keri ran on no sleep. Five hours and she was good. She would cook, clean, and run track as if she had a full night’s sleep. As the storm passed she crawled out of bed. She headed for her computer so she wasn’t so bored. Never interrupt her computer time, unless you wanted a black eye. She logged onto Facebook and started playing Garden World. It was her escape from reality. That was her world. As the seconds ticked past her head got heavier and heavier. She thought she would rest her head for a moment but dozed off into sleep.
Both teens slept peacefully. No nightmares. No dreams. They were so exhausted sleep just over whelmed. Josh’s parents went to work. Same with Keri’s step dad. Her little sister was away at her friend’s house. So both their houses were empty. No one bothered to check up on them before the left. Josh woke up around noon. His head was throbbing and body tingly. Missing the sensation from the night before, he automatically went for his chew. He stepped into the shower and washed all his problems away. Then afterwards he shrugged on some clothes and let the dogs out. The sun burned his eyes so he stumbled back inside. The phone rang. Who could it possibly be? No one ever called.
Keri slept in, too. She woke up at nine. Freaking out she grabbed her drug, Mountain Dew. She threw herself into a panic attack. All she kept thinking was this is the one that’ll kill me. Tears flooded her face only making it that much more harder to breathe. Slowly her breathing came slowly back. As her life flashed in front of her eyes, she had only one regret, breaking up with Josh. Trying to figure out how to go about it she took a shower and ate. You can’t do anything on an empty stomach. Finally around noon she decided to call him.
They had a brief conversation on the phone. Josh didn’t want to talk to her but he couldn’t help himself. He loved her. Everything about her. He agreed to meet up with her latter that night. One decision he might regret.
Josh’s hung over wasn’t that bad when the sunset came. Praying she wouldn’t notice he trudged out of the door and hopped on his bike. They were going to met at the play ground. It was in the middle of their houses. They never hung out her often but it was public so incase a fight broke out between them there would be witnesses.
Keri did her hair into a neat pony tail and put on get favorite pair of jeans. She was hoping to get back with josh. Hoping that she hadn’t caused too much damage, that he would be desperate enough to take her back. Just in case her words wouldn’t be enough she put on a push up bra. Boys always had a thing for big boobs.
Josh walked up to Keri who was sitting on the swing. His heart began to ache. He missed her so much. Just suck it up Josh, she was you past. Let her go. His inner voice said.
He bluntly said, “What do you want?”
Her smile faded. “Can’t we talk?”
He felt half bad for being mean but part of him loved it. He now thrived on her pain to cover up his own.
“Look,” she said. “I wanted to say I’m sorry. I regret breaking up with you. I miss you. You are my life. Please. I’m begging you. Forgive me?” Her eyes pleaded. A smile cracked on his lips. “Yes.”
She hugged him tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered. Then she wove her fingers through his.
Maybe it was from the alcohol or from what she had done, but his started spinning. Yet he felt warm and fuzzy. She flopped down on the ground. Josh wrapped his arm tightly around her. He missed that. He missed her.
Fireflies filled the air around them. Her hair was the only scent he could smell.
“I love you,” she said. “This is so romantic. What do you think?”
“Yeah,” was the only thing he could say.
“We were meant to be. We are perfect for one another.”
Josh’s heart started to beat faster and his heart began to ache more. He hasn’t been that happy in such a long time. He loved her. Maybe everything would fix itself.
Her phone went off. “It’s my step dad I have to go.” She grinned. “See you later.”
Josh just nodded and rode his bike aimlessly home. So many thoughts were in his head. He was so confused. He grabbed his phone:
Wat should i do? Keri asked me out? i

Ivan replied:

No one had helped. He went to the one thing he knew that would help...beer. After a few holes in the wall later he realized what he had to do. Be the man she always wanted him to be.
Two days later they hung out at Josh’s house. Well more like Keri stayed for a few seconds.
“I’m being the man you always wanted me to be. I’M breaking up with YOU. It’s the manly thing to do.” Josh said.
Keri just laughed.
He groaned. “No, I’m not joking. You ripped my heart to shreds. I love you but we were not meant to be. I want to be your friend but I can’t date you…I’m sorry.”
She just ran out of the door and slammed it behind her. He was going to offer her a ride home but upon seeing her angry he thought best to let her run it off. This time he ripped his own heart in shreds but it felt right. He feels older, like an adult. He did the right thing.
The past is the past. You can’t live in the past but the present. He finally saw the dim light at the end of the road. He knew the road would be long but he could do it. His friends will always have his back and will be there to help him through it. He took a deep breath. The air was different. Fresh.
Crisp. He liked this road he was going down. Happy that he just stared a new chapter instead of closing the book he headed down to Ben’s house. He need some harassment >:)
